Scammers are targeting myGov accounts to steal thousands.
Families have been caught in a scam which has seen cyber criminals and scammers targeting myGov accounts. They’ve been lodging false tax returns, leaving victims in serious debt.
Every day, scammers are finding new ways to target unsuspecting victims and steal their hard-earned money. One of the latest scams involves targeting myGov accounts, the Australian government’s online portal for accessing government services.
The scam works by scammers sending out emails that appear to be from the government, asking the recipient to log into their myGov account for important information. Once the unsuspecting recipient logs in, the scammers use the information they gain access to, such as tax and bank details, to steal thousands of dollars from the victim’s bank account or lodge false tax returns.
The Australian government has warned all myGov users to be vigilant and not to give out any personal information via email. They also advise users to never click on links in emails that you don’t recognize, as these could be malicious and could give scammers access to your account.
To protect your account, the government recommends that you create a strong password that is difficult to guess and that you enable two-factor authentication on your account. This requires you to enter a code sent to your phone or email address each time you log in.
If you think your account has been compromised, contact the government immediately and report the fraud to your bank.
Scammers are always looking for new ways to target victims, so it’s important to stay alert and be aware of any suspicious emails you receive. With a bit of caution, you can protect yourself and your myGov account from scammers.
